Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga, the highest among the twelve Jyotirlingas of the country, is situated on the Kedar peak of the Himalayas. Kedarnath Dham and the temple is surrounded by mountains on three sides. On one side is about 22 thousand feet high Kedarnath, on the other side is 21 thousand 600 feet high Bhatkund and on the third side is 22 thousand 700 feet high Bharatkund. There is a confluence of not only three mountains but also five rivers – Mandakini, Madhuganga, Kshirganga, Saraswati and Swarnagauri. Some of these rivers are no longer in existence but the Mandakini, a tributary of the Alaknanda, exists even today. On the banks of this is Kedareshwar Dham. Heavy snow and rain in winter here
